CANNABIS
Sir-Nandor Tanczos' call to decriminalise cannabis should send warning
alarms to everyone.
The failure of law enforcement to eradicate this problem and the
growing criminal income from this source are two arguments used to
justify decriminalisation. Tanczos continues to grab headlines by
making impressive claims about the current usage of cannabis, yet he
never names anyone, or provides evidence to support those claims.
Cannabis is a mind-changing drug, with potential long-term effects on
our youth. Efforts to change the law should be resisted
strenuously.
Perhaps the lack of enthusiasm shown by politicians, the reluctance of
the judiciary to apply meaningful sentences, and the deliberate
under-manning of the police force are the reasons that cannabis is the
problem it is today. That could all change if there was the will to do
so.
To believe that decriminalisation is the panacea to our drug problems
is naive and dangerous.
