BOOST DRUG SQUAD
IT IS hard to believe that the Victoria drug squad is under strength. But
that is the alarming state of affairs reported in todays Herald Sun.
In July 1997, the squad had 76 officers. Today, as the impact of illegal
drugs goes from bad to worse in Victoria, the nominal strength has fallen
to 62, but only 35 are currently available, because of leave, training,
secondment and resignations.
Of these, 27 officers are attending to amphetamines and to Asian heroin
dealers, leaving only eight for cocaine, ecstasy, LSD, and non-Asian heroin
trafficking.
The force has belatedly advertised for three new officers. Is it serious?
It seems we are so preoccupied with trendy solutions such as injecting
rooms that we have lost sight of the real enemy - the peddlers
