AIRPORT DRUG TEST SNARES 'MULE'

Canada Customs officials say that while five travellers arriving at Pearson
Airport have undergone urine tests for suspected drug smuggling, only one
has been found to have ingested cocaine.

The bold urine-testing program is the first of its kind at any North
American airport.

Some Toronto travel agencies say the three-month pilot project could have an
impact on travellers who feel "Big Brother" is watching them.

Customs spokesman Michel Cleroux said about 120 drug swallowers a year are
arrested at Pearson and the urine test is an option available to avoid
detention until a bowel movement.

GREEN LIGHT

"Drug trafficking is an important challenge for us at Pearson. Most
suspected swallowers arrive at Pearson."

The urine testing, now in its second week, has been given the green light
for use by the Supreme Court of Canada. If successful, the test will be used
at all major Canadian airports.

Cleroux said the test can detect traces of THC, cocaine and heroin in a
person's urine. Even when swallowed inside a condom traces of the drug can
leach into a person's body.

Officials said customs officers are trained to operate the urine machines,
located at all three terminals. A person's urine is analyzed in minutes as
they wait in another room.
