MARIJUANA LEVELS HIGH IN NEWBORN BABIES: STUDY
Surprisingly high levels of marijuana have been detected in the first bowel
motions of Australian newborn babies, a researcher said yesterday.
A study of 50 babies in Townsville found that one-fifth had been exposed to
cannabis before birth.
The director of neonatology at Townsville's Kirwan Hospital for Women, Dr
John Whitehall, told a Perinatal Society conference in Brisbane that the
study also revealed concerning levels of nicotine byproducts and exposure
to pesticides.
He said exposure to chemicals could contribute to the risk of poor foetal
development, low birth weight and sudden infant death syndrome.
