RESULTS OF DPI SURVEY ON RISKY BEHAVIORS
The state Department of Public Instruction Monday released the results of
an anonymous survey conducted last spring among 1, 336 ninth- through
12th-graders in the state's public schools.
The survey found that:
38 percent reported riding with a drunken driver at least once in the 30
days prior to the survey.
28 percent drove after drinking alcohol.
6 percent carried weapons on school grounds.
31 percent were in a fight on school property.
10 percent reported ever having been verbally or physically forced to take
part in sexual activity
28 percent seriously considered committing suicide in the past year.
32 percent reported smoking.
22 percent smoked marijuana in 30 days prior to survey.
29 percent said they were significantly more likely to have someone offer,
sell or give them illegal drugs.
44 percent said it is important for them to delay sexual intercourse until
they are married, engaged or an adult in long-term committed relationship.
42 percent reported having sexual intercourse.
14 percent of students were overweight according to their Body Mass Index.
61 percent of students said they had exercised or participated in physical
activity for at least 20 minutes on three or more of the past seven days.
