SIR Your correspondence following Tom Utley's article (March 29) on the
"decriminalisation" of cannabis suggests a degree of support for his idea
which may indeed be sensible.

However, have its advocates considered it in the context of cannabis users'
general safety and personal competence? Unlike alcohol, its active chemical
constituents remain in the body's fatty tissues for several days after use,
and affect the central nervous system. To smoke cannabis on Saturday might
impair a user's ability to drive until Wednesday.
