HOMECOMING QUEEN WANTS EXPULSION REVERSED

A Gulf Shores High School homecoming queen will ask a federal judge to
reverse her expulsion that came after a drug-sniffing police dog
detected suspected marijuana fragments in her parents' car parked in
the school lot.

Jenny Hammock, 18, was expelled Feb. 11. A Gulf Shores police search
of the school parking lot, using a drug dog, led to a white Toyota
4-Runner registered to Hammock's parents, the Mobile Register reported
Tuesday.

Hammock was never allowed to return to class, a decision approved by
the Baldwin County school board and the superintendent, who followed a
"zero-tolerance" policy for drugs.

Hammock's family sued the school system. A hearing in U.S. District
Court was set for 2 p.m. today.

Hammock's lawyer, James May of Foley, filed the suit, which seeks
damages for the teen's expulsion, among other claims. The suit claims
Hammock has been humiliated and embarrassed by the incident.
