SHE DIDN'T INHALE
Readers of the Montgomery Gazette recently opened their papers to find a
startling sight: a photograph of Del. Cheryl C. Kagan (D-Montgomery),
cheerfully smoking what appeared to be a giant marijuana cigarette.
The photo was taken during the General Assembly follies, the annual
end-of-session comedy show performed in the auditorium of St. John's
College. Kagan appeared in a skit that mocked the medical uses of
marijuana, playing a headache-stricken patient who is successfully treated
by stoned doctors in the "Cannabis-Care" infirmary.
The publication of the photograph was "mortifying," Kagan said. "I thought
it was ironic because I'm such a square. My first reaction was, 'Oh my God,
this is going to kill me in the next election.'
"But then I thought, 'Well, the voters have a sense of humor.' And
hopefully they understand we have a sense of humor, something we
desperately need here with the session coming to an end."
