`COLD-TURKEY' WITHDRAWAL
In her April 11 Viewpoints letter, "Why bother to follow rules?" Marta Glass
says the prison system should spend more money on rehabilitating prisoners,
rather than punishing them.
However, we would likely spend more money "rehabilitating" these people than
we would locking them up -- and with much less effect.
Perhaps, instead, we should stiffen penalties, while initiating useful
rehabilitation such as forcing illegal drug users (heroin addicts) to go
"cold turkey."
They would eventually get over their addiction and go through enough
self-inflicted punishment that they might think twice before using their
drugs again.
