SELANGOR COPS TO CONDUCT NON-STOP RAIDS ON NIGHTSPOTS

KLANG: Selangor police chief Datuk Nik Ismail Yusoff has ordered
non-stop nightly raids on entertainment outlets until the scourge of
Ecstasy pills and other kinds of drugs are eliminated from these nightspots.

"No discotheques, video arcades or karaoke lounges will be spared. We
will not stop our raids until drug pushers get the message that we
want them out from entertainment outlets," he told reporters yesterday.

Nik Ismail said he had directed all OCPDs in the state to conduct
regular raids on entertainment outlets in their districts.

"The police, with co-operation from local councils, will also close
illegal discos and video arcades. "Tip-offs from the public are
welcome," he said after visiting 42 patients at the Tengku Ampuan
Rahimah Hospital here yesterday in conjunction with the 193rd Police
Day celebrations.

Nik Ismail led a team of senior police officers and their wives in
presenting gifts to a retired policeman, wives and children of police
personnel warded in the hospital.

He said OCPDs were supposed to submit weekly reports about the raids
in their respective districts.

He pledged that the raids would be a long-term commitment and not a
"flash in the pan" reaction to press reports over the return of
Ecstasy pill abuse in nightspots.

On the notoriety of unauthorised automated teller machine (ATM)
withdrawals in the state, he said only 83 cases were detected this
year.

"The reported cases of unauthorised withdrawals were not due to
syndicated cloning like the cases in Penang," he said.

On gangsterism in schools, Nik Ismail said police had set up a joint
secretariat with the Selangor Education Department which would hold
regular meetings to solve the problem.
