COMMUNITY STRATEGY TO TACKLE DRUGS

A CONCERTED campaign to tackle the drugs problem in the north side of
Ballymena is about to get under way.

And the hope is that new facilities in the heart of the Dunclug estate -
which is fighting to rid itself of its image as a heroin hotspot - will
bring back community confidence.

Recently appointed Community Drugs Information Worker, Geraldine McDonnell,
has said efforts are about to be made to confront the drugs problems head on.

A drugs information office and a support group for families of heroin-users
will open at Durleston House flats at Dunclug next month, probably May 11.

Ms McDonnell said the community was keen to see measures directed at
combating and dealing with the drugs problem in Dunclug.

The aim is primarily three-pronged - to give out information to the
community to prevent the drugs situation from worsening; to give help and
support to families of drug-users; and to help restore pride and confidence
in Dunclug.

Ms McDonnell said: "Many problems come along with the drugs abuse. People
experience a mix of anxiety for the safety of their children; frustration
that they are helpless at the hands of those dealing in drugs; anger at the
crimes committed against them to fund drug habits and confusion as to how
and where to accept help.

"In Ballymena the residents of Dunclug have experienced some, if not all,
of these feelings."

Ms McDonnell said the services were the result of suggestions made by
residents who feel they are necessary in alleviating the problem, and the
image the estate has gained as a result of drug abuse.
