VIETNAM MUST PAY PRICE FOR EXECUTING CANADIAN
Vietnam's sudden execution of Nguyen Thi Hiep, a Canadian citizen whose
guilt on drug smuggling charges was in doubt, is a gross insult to her
family and supporters and to relations between our two countries.
Canada had been seeking clemency for her on the charges, but Vietnam ignored
her dual citizenship in favour of viewing her solely as a Vietnamese citizen
so it could deliver its harshest penalty.
Respect for human life and citizenship is a something all Canadians value
and Ottawa's initiation of diplomatic and economic sanctions against Vietnam
is both appropriate and welcome.
