HOUSE MEMBERS JUST SAY NO

A majority of House lawmakers sent a smoke signal to Coloradans that
they oppose the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. House
resolution 1033 passed 49-15 after several lawmakers argued that
approving marijuana for pain was a back-door attempt to legalize the
drug for recreational use. Supporters say it helps people suffering
from cancer, glaucoma and other illnesses.

Voters in November will decide whether to legalize the medicinal use
of marijuana. Supporters had tried to get the initiative on the ballot
in 1998, but then-Secretary of State Vikki Buckley, who died last
July, said they had not gathered the required number of signatures.
The court said they did.
