RAVE RULES IN WORKS

The city is one step closer to bringing in regulations to make raves -
all-night dance parties - safer.

Yesterday the city's executive committee unanimously agreed to review how
raves operate and create guidelines for the running of such events.

The new rules could take a couple of months to draft.

Edmonton police Const. Rick Abbott told the committee there's very little
the police can do about the parties unless they have some rules to work from.

"We have no authority to deal with these (parties). We see it on the verge
of an out-of-control thing. Some kind of rules would make it safer," said
Abbott.

While Abbott suggested raves are rife with drug use, local rave promoter
Gary Dewhurst disagreed.

"I don't think 90% of the kids are on drugs, they're there for the music,"
said Dewhurst.

And he is pleased that regulations are in the works.

Eight dancers collapsed at a rave in Edmonton in April.

A committee will be formed of all the interested parties and overseen by
the city's bylaw department.
