NYC SHOOTING VICTIM'S FAMILY TO SUE
NEW YORK (AP) -- Family members of a man shot by police said Wednesday they
intend to sue Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, the police commissioner and the police
officer who killed him for $100 million.
Patrick Dorismond's relatives say they will sue because the city and the
police violated Dorismond's civil rights, said their attorney, Johnnie
Cochran. They are also suing for wrongful death and pain and suffering.
Dorismond, 26, was fatally shot by an undercover police detective during a
drug buy-and-bust operation in Manhattan on March 16, making him the fourth
unarmed black man fatally shot by police in the last 13 months.
His death sparked outrage among minorities, especially when Giuliani
authorized the commissioner to release Dorismond's sealed juvenile record
just hours after the shooting.
In the notice of claim filed Wednesday, the family alleges that Dorismond
was targeted by police because he was black.
NYPD officials declined to comment.
