SURPRISING STANCE FROM POPULAR EX-ADDICT

The courage, determination and persistence of singer Debra Byrne to
conquer heroin are qualities needed by every other drug addict. Her
example is an inspiration to many.

In any plan to help addicts, the main aim should be to offer them
rehabilitation that will encourage them towards a drug-free lifestyle.

Any program that includes a so-called safe injecting facility will
keep addicts on drugs, worsening their condition.

Overseas experiences, notably the Dutch and the Swiss, have proved
this.

It is therefore surprising and sad that a popular personality, who has
faced death from drugs, should recommend such a step to others whose
lives are at risk from overdose (Herald Sun, April 28).

For the sake of those victims, I hope Ms Byrne will alter her public
stance on injecting rooms to helping addicts along the more positive,
realistic path of rehabilitation where further heroin use is not taken
for granted.
