FIVE ADDICTS DIE IN DUBLIN
FIVE heroin users have died in Dublin after suffering symptoms identical to
the ones that have killed 11 addicts in Glasgow.
Since 13 May, ten severely ill heroin users have been admitted to St James'
Hospital in the Irish capital.
Special alert notices have been issued to Irish GPs, hospitals, clinics and
health centres warning there may be contaminated heroin in circulation.
Dr Brian O'Herlihy, the director of public health for the Irish Republic's
eastern regional health authority, said that tests so far showed that four
of the deaths fitted the Glasgow "case definition". He said: "There are
another three cases that may fit the Scottish case definition."
