DRUG BOSS SAID ARRESTED IN COLOMBIA
MIAMI (AP) - A high-ranking member of a powerful drug cartel has been
arrested in Colombia, according to U.S. authorities who say they are
cracking down on what they describe as the world's largest drug money
laundering operation.
Jairo Garcia-Lozano, 51, who is accused of running drug and money
laundering operations in Mexico, Canada and Miami, was arrested last week
at the El Dorado Airport in Bogota, FBI and U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency
officials announced Thursday. Colombian authorities nabbed him after he
became separated from his six bodyguards at a security check point.
The Justice Department was expected to seek his extradition from Colombia.
Ricardo Martinez, assistant special agent in charge of the Miami FBI
office, called the arrest a ``milestone'' in their investigation and said
other ``significant players'' were expected to fall into the net.
Authorities described Garcia-Lozano as top boss Diego Montoya-Sanchez's
right-hand man and said he was responsible for importing several tons of
cocaine into the United States and laundering millions of dollars.
Montoya-Sanchez, authorities said, is considered the most powerful drug
lord operating in the same area as the now-defunct Cali cartel. He was
still at large.
Both men were among five indicted Thursday in Miami on federal charges of
conspiracy to import cocaine and money laundering. Two of them, Juan
Guillermo Galvez and Gustavo Alonzo Echeverri-Garcia, were arrested in
Miami last month. The whereabouts of the third man was not clear.
