THREE N.Y. JAIL GUARDS SENTENCED
UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Two jail guards were sentenced to 11 years in
prison Friday for fatally beating an inmate who was crying out for his
methadone.
Patrick Regnier and Edward Velazquez had pleaded guilty to beating
Thomas Pizzuto in his Nassau County Jail cell in 1999 to quiet him
down. Pizzuto, a heroin addict serving 90 days for traffic violations,
died three days later.
A third guard, Joseph Bergen, was sentenced to five years and 10
months for doctoring paperwork to cover up the assault at the jail on
Long Island.
