HELP AVAILABLE IF THEY WERE ADDICTS

The other day, you reported on the plight of an elderly couple who, because
of the high price of prescription drugs, had to file for bankruptcy because
their income wouldn't cover the drugs, food and rent.

Someone suggested they get divorced because they would get more money by
being single.

I don't know what their illnesses are, but it is a safe bet that their
problems are not self-inflicted. Just imagine if they were alcoholics or
narcotic addicts. They would be able to go to the welfare department every
month and be given a check that would enable them to purchase the alcohol
or drugs they needed.

It is really a sad thing when an elderly couple who evidently worked all
their lives run into a situation like this and then are told that all they
have to do is get divorced in order to qualify for more money. For decent
people who are down on their luck through no fault of their own, that must
be devastating.

I deeply resent every dollar of my tax money that goes to supply alcoholics
and drug addicts with whatever they need to satisfy their needs. They got
themselves into their situation, and they can get themselves out of it
without my money. And I don't care if they have to go through a certain
amount of suffering.
