12 STUDENTS AMONG 93 NABBED IN DRUG OPS
ALOR STAR: Ninety-three people, including 12 university students, were
detained by police during a two-day anti-narcotics operation.
Kedah Narcotics Department acting chief DSP Mohd Nor Mansor said the
suspects, aged between 18 and 37, were picked up in Changloon, Sintok
and Bukit Kayu Hitam on June 3 and 4.
"The students, including two women, were arrested along the roadside
and border area,'' he said yesterday.
DSP Mohd Nor said the students claimed that they had only consumed
"EP10'' pills to stay awake to study and were not aware that such
pills contained amphetamine.
"The students were released on bail while the rest were remanded at
the Jitra police station,'' he said.
He said all of them would be charged under Section 3(1) Drug Addicts
Act (Treatment and Rehabilitation) 1983 and Section 15(a) of the
Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for committing the offence.
Some 83 policemen from the State Narcotics department and National
Drug Agency (NDA) were involved in the operation codenamed Ops Berkas
led by Kedah NDA deputy director Abdul Rahman Hamid.
