'VOLATILE' MAN SOUGHT IN SLAYING
Mother Of Five Shot To Death During Drug Deal
A man described as violent, unpredictable and volatile is being sought
in the slaying of a 40-year-old Moss Park woman.
Casey Cheyanne Smith, a mother of five children, was shot to death May
28 in an alcove behind a Shuter St. apartment complex while trying to
buy crack cocaine.
Detective Frank Skubic of Toronto's homicide squad identified the
suspect as Wayne Marshall Fairclough, 26, a long-time area resident.
Skubic said Fairclough has not been seen since the slaying, but it's
believed he is still in the Toronto area.
He described the slaying as a "senseless and callous act" and said the
community is devastated and in fear for its safety.
"We would like to see Fairclough taken into custody as quickly and
safely as possible," Skubic said at a news conference yesterday.
He also appealed for Fairclough to give himself up.
He warned members of the public not to approach Fairclough, but to
call 911.
Skubic said anyone who knows where Fairclough may be hiding should
contact the homicide squad at 808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 222-8477.
"He's a very dangerous man," Skubic said. "He's been involved in drug
activity in the past. He's known to us. He's known to be very violent,
unpredictable and at times volatile. He should be considered armed and
extremely dangerous."
He said Fairclough is known to people in the Moss Park
community.
Fairclough also uses the names Wayne Marshall Hastings, Mark Wallace,
Wayne Marshall Robinson and Wayne Marshall Malcolm.
He is 6-foot-1, 180 pounds with a medium build, brown eyes, and short,
curly black hair. He may not have shaved for several days. He has
scars on his right wrist, the back of his head and neck, and a
birthmark on the left side of his head.
Skubic said police are investigating another man who was at the scene
and did nothing to prevent the killing.
He said that man is 18 years old, 5-foot-8, with a slim build, short
black hair and is clean-shaven.
Smith, who has children ranging from 5 to 21 years, lived close to
where she was killed.
Skubic said it was about 4 a.m. when Smith approached a group of three
or four men and women and then went into the alcove area of the
building with two men. He said a confrontation occurred and Smith was
shot in the head.
Homicide investigators are looking into the possibility of links to
other homicides in the area, including the Jan. 5, 1997, killings of
Florence Harrison and Therese May Melanson.
