NO TO LIBERALISATION
A Christchurch District Court judge has spoken out strongly
against liberalising New Zealand's drug laws.
Judge Stephen Erber said yesterday acceptance of drug-taking left the
community a sitting duck for criminal offending. "Simply because
alcohol is a drug and causes problems is no reason for introducing
further and more likely devastating problems in the community," he
said.
Before him for sentencing was 17-year-old Lee Pata Davis, unemployed,
who had accumulated a long list of convictions over the past two years
and who, the judge said, was addicted to cannabis.
He jailed Davis for 10 months on charges of unlawfully interfering
with a car, carrying a knife as an offensive weapon and breaching parole.
