DISCHARGE CONSIDERED IF ANTI-MARIJUANA BOOK STUDIED

A man seeking to be discharged without conviction on charges of
possessing cannabis and a cannabis smoking pipe is to copy out a
chapter from The Great Brain Robbery.

Judge David Saunders made the suggestion in the Dunedin District Court
yesterday when Peter Allan Tuffery (18), student, admitted the two
offences.

Remanding Tuffery to July 4, the judge indicated a discharge would be
considered if by then the man has read the book and written out the
chapter on marijuana. Tuffery is also to carry out 30 hours' voluntary
community work.

Prosecutor Constable David Pyper said the charges followed an
unrelated police visit to Tuffery's address on June 2. There was
sufficient cannabis in a small bag for several cigarettes and one
cannabis smoking pipe.

Tuffery was not eligible for diversion.
