INJECTING ROOM LICENCE MOVE
THE Uniting Church will apply to the State Government by tomorrow for
a licence to run Australiaís first legal heroin Injecting room.
The injecting room looks set to be up and running in the "final
quarter" of this year, most probably in October.
Church spokesman the Reverend Harry Herbert said the application had
been "on the verge of being lodged" with the Government.
Mr Herbert said the process of applying for the licence and ensuring
the application met all the Government criteria was "quite time consuming".
He said the architect overseeing the redesign of the former pinball
pariour, which was the site of the room, estimated it would take at
least two months to complete.
The NSW Police Service and the Health Department will evaluate the
Uniting Church's proposal and are likely to grant the licence within
the next month.
