LIB BACKS DRUG TREATMENT
LIBERAL MP Ross Smith has backed a treatment alternative to heroin
injecting rooms.
He is the first senior Liberal to indicate how he might vote when the
heroin injecting rooms Bill is debated in August.
Mr Smith said last night the rapid drug-induced naltrexone method of
detoxification could offer salvation to thousands of addicts.
Mr Smith, who represents Glen Waverley, told the Herald Sun, his
constituents were frightened by the State Government's message that it
was condoning heroin use.
Pointing out that NSW this week agreed to provide naltrexone treatment
in public hospitals, the MP said: "Using this alternative is something
the government should have considered before suggesting injecting
facilities."
