AUSTRALIAN TEST NEEDED FOR NEW DETOX DRUG
GPs using methadone to treat heroin addicts (The Age, 16/6) might be
interested in an opiate detoxification drug being used effectively
overseas. Lofexidine, which has been available in the UK for nine
years, is not addictive and can be used for both heroin and methadone
detox (10 to l4 days), without dangerous side-effects.
It is estimated that in the past five years British doctors have
prescribed more than 80,000 detox courses, and a review of controlled
trials has suggested its suitability for use in outpatient settings.
Hopefully, Lofexidine will be given an Australian trial
soon.
