DECIPHERING ADDICTION

To the Editor:

A June 24 Arts & Ideas pages article describes the debate between two camps
of anti-drug crusaders: those who say drug addiction is an immoral choice
and others who see it as a "brain disease." But it is also possible to see
addiction as an "obsessive-compulsive" behavioral disorder, akin to
compulsive gambling or repetitive hand-washing. Treatment for such disorders
emphasizes helping people understand and manage their behavior. That
includes identifying false assumptions ("I just have no self-control") and
avoiding circumstances that set off compulsive behavior (hanging out with
the guys).

Treating addicts as immoral or diseased makes them view themselves as bad or
helpless, and makes it harder for them to gain self-knowledge and
self-control.
