CLUBS' CONCERN AT DRUGS
Rural sporting clubs are concerned at the widespread use of cannabis among
members, a survey has revealed.
Research by the Australian Drug Foundation found the level of cannabis use
at sporting clubs was very similar to usage rates in the broader community.
But foundation researcher Dr Pamela Snow said they were pleased to discover
most of the clubs surveyed said it was an issue that needed to be tackled.
Of the 21 to 30 year age bracket, 46 per cent of those surveyed said they
knew someone at the club who used cannabis.
Nearly 30 per cent of all respondents said they knew someone who mixed
cannabis and alcohol and were concerned about it.
Overall, 75 per cent of respondents indicated that it was important for
clubs to have a policy on illicit drugs.
Thirteen country sporting clubs took part.
