BEAZLEY BACKFLIPS ON HEROIN TRIALS
Federal Opposition leader Kim Beazley says he has changed his mind on the
issue of trialling legalised heroin, and now supports the idea.
Mr Beazley says he supports a range of measures, including safe injecting
rooms, subsidised Naltrexone treatment and heroin trials, in an attempt to
keep people alive.
But the Labor leader has told Melbourne radio 3AW there are potential legal
problems with a trial of legalised heroin, which would have to be overcome.
"I have an open mind on it now, I shut it off, as you know, some time ago,"
he said.
"I'm a bit in the camp now of the people who say [it's acceptable] in a
controlled way, and providing you're there with you're international
agreements.
"In a controlled way you've got to try a whole range of things to get
people unhooked," Mr Beazley said.
