ATTORNEY FOR CARTEL SUSPECT FOUND SHOT DEAD
TOLUCA, Mexico (AP) -- A second attorney for Jesus Labra, accused of being
a major figure in the Tijuana-based Arellano Felix drug cartel, was found
slain yesterday.
Labra was ordered five weeks ago to stand trial on weapons charges.
A spokesman for the Mexico state Attorney General's Office confirmed that
the bullet-riddled body of Eugenio Zafra Garcia had been found in front of
his house in Toluca, the state capital west of Mexico City.
Another Labra attorney, Gustavo Galvez Reyes, was found tortured and
suffocated in Mexico City after failing to win Labra's release from house
detention following his arrest March 11 in Tijuana.
U.S. and Mexican officials say Labra is the financial mastermind of
Mexico's most violent drug organization, the Tijuana-based cartel of the
Arellano Felix brothers.
Labra and Ismael Higuera Guerrero, alleged to be another top Arellano Felix
operative, are being held at Mexico's maximum security prison at Almoloya
de Juarez, north of Toluca.
