DRUG SWEEP COMES UP CLEAN

Agents Checking Parks After Phish Concert Make No Arrests, Declare
Success

Mukwonago - Drug agents declared success in the first of several
planned compliance checks at county parks this summer when they made
no arrests for suspected drug and alcohol use by campers.

"If I don't have to arrest anybody, that's fine with me - as long as
people are complying with what they're asked to do on the streets and
in the parks," said Waukesha County sheriff's Capt. Terry Martorano,
head of the Waukesha County Drug Metro Enforcement Unit.

Drug agents launched a new initiative over the weekend at Mukwonago
Park to send drug officers on overnight shifts into county parks to
hunt for illicit drug and alcohol use. The unit responded to
complaints by park rangers about problems with concert-goers who camp
after attending various events such as the concerts at the Alpine
Valley Music Theatre near East Troy.

Martorano said news reports announcing the initiative may have helped
to keep the park quiet on Saturday following the Phish rock music
concert. Agents had anticipated much activity at the park because of
that event.

Before the concert, deputies conducted searches for drugs in cars
stopped for traffic violations along I-43. About 20 tickets were
issued, including eight for drug possession. Martorano said 99% of the
people told authorities they were headed to Alpine Valley.
