MAINE MAN GIVEN MAXIMUM SENTENCE FOR 11TH DRUG CONVICTION

BRENTWOOD, N.H. - A Maine man with 10 previous drug convictions
has been given the maximum sentence for another drug conviction.

Steven Smalley of Kittery, whose 46th birthday is Saturday, was
sentenced to 71/2 to 15 years in prison for possession of crack cocaine.

Smalley had prior convictions in Florida, Maine, Massachusetts and New
Hampshire, Rockingham County Attorney Jim Reams said.

Smalley was stopped at the Hampton tollbooth July 5, 1999, because of
a loud muffler, and when the state trooper noticed his hands shaking,
he asked to search the car. Smalley consented, Reams said.

Reams said federal charges of possession with intent to sell crack
cocaine are pending against Smalley.
