DRUG COALITION TO HOST STREET DANCE
The Whitecourt Community Drug Coalition will be holding a street
dance on Friday, Oct. 13 as a means to bring the community together
and get another step closer to creating a town that's free from the
harmful effects of alcohol and other drugs.
Everybody is welcome to attend the dance that will begin at 7 p.m.
through to 10 p.m. on 52 Avenue between the Town Office and Fire Hall.
Coalition members Sharon Shannon and Michelle Standish say the drug
and alcohol-free event is a fun and unique way to create awareness
and show others how they can get involved with the coalition.
"There will be music, and there will be information for people. It's
a gathering for the community. People can come out and meet their
neighbors, they can come out and get more information on the
coalition," Shannon said. "This is one of the first steps to building
our coalition and creating some awareness in the community of who we
are and how other people can become involved."
Standish said a big part of the event revolves around moving toward a
sense of community by trying to encourage people to come together.
Standish and Shannon are encouraging people to dress warmly and bring
lawn chairs. In the event of poor weather, such as rain or snow, the
dance will be moved to the Whitecourt Community Centre.
The Whitecourt Boys and Girls Club will be providing a barbecue and
canteen at the street dance, and there will also be a heater on site
to lessen the chill of the fall weather.
An announcement will be made at the event regarding the Wear the Gear
winner, where an X-Box 360 will be awarded. Additional prizes will
also be handed out.
