DAUGHTER OF JAILED MEXICAN DRUG LORD GETS 16-YEAR SENTENCE FOR TRAFFICKING

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- A judge gave a 16-year sentence to the daughter of a
Mexican drug lord who is imprisoned for killing a U.S. drug agent, the
Mexican attorney general's office said Thursday.

Ofelia Fonseca was convicted of drug trafficking in connection with the
seizure of 980 pounds of cocaine. The drugs were recovered from a small
plane intercepted by drug agents in the southern Mexican state of Quintana
Roo in January 1999, authorities said.

Fonseca's husband and another man were convicted earlier on similar charges
and are each serving 21-year terms, the attorney general's office said.

Her father, Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo, is serving 30 years for the torture
and killing of Enrique Camarena, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration
agent. Prosecutors charged that Fonseca Carrillo ordered the slaying. He was
among two dozen people convicted in 1985 in connection with the case.
