PATROLS CALLED FOR

Melbourne's drug problem should be fought by increasing pollee patrols,
according to public submissions to a special city council meeting.

The meeting was held to help the council form its overall drug strategy
which could include provisions for a supervised injecting room.

The council has not made its views on injecting rooms public.

Speakers told the council's environment committee that Melbourne's CBD had
a terrible drug problem needing urgent action.

Most mentioned increased police foot patrols as the best way to fight it.

Drug experts, welfare service providers, residents' groups and members of
the public were among more than 15 speakers.
