$10M HEROIN RAID
A SYDNEY methadone clinic client was charged yesterday with smuggling
heroin worth up to $10 million into Australia. The unemployed man, 21,
who is Korean-born with permanent residency, is expected to appear in
a Sydney local court today.
The 10kg of heroin, estimated at more than 500,000 "hits", was
air-freighted from Hong Kong last week. Customs officers seized the
shipment after high-tech equipment detected drugs hidden inside four
small marble columns.
Australian Federal Police swapped the drugs with another substance and
tracked it to a home unit in Strathfield, in Sydney's west. At 4am
yesterday, AFP agents raided the unit and arrested the man.
Justice Minister Amanda Vanstone said the huge seizure was a warning
to traffickers.
