SELECTION PROCESS

As a professional police officer and veteran of 21 years of Colorado law
enforcement, I would be offended if I was asked to submit to a random drug
test.

The current scandals now occurring in the Denver Police Department had to
have been ongoing. A veteran officer would not engage in this behavior if
he had not gotten away with it before.

Part of the problem also lies in the selection process, training and
supervision of these officers.

With a proper selection process, which includes a comprehensive background
investigation, random drug testing would not be necessary as the
undesirable would be weeded out.

I would also like to remind you that most police departments have a 12- to
18-month probationary period which may include academy and field training.
This period is also part of the selection process, and an undesirable
element would also be weeded out during this period.
