U.S. HOUSE, 3RD DISTRICT: GREGORY FRUSHOUR IS BEST OF TWO IN DEMOCRATIC
FIELD

For the first time since 1982, Democrats in the Third Congressional
District -- Kent, Ionia and most of Barry counties -- have a choice in the
congressional primary. Gregory Frushour, a retired military officer and
automobile manufacturing consultant from Ada, shares the ballot with Tim
Steele, a former radio personality who now owns a video production company
and lives in East Grand Rapids. The winner will face U.S. Rep. Vernon
Ehlers, R-Grand Rapids, in November.

Neither Mr. Frushour nor Mr. Steele has held public office but both speak
with some passion and knowledge of the issues. Beyond that, they offer
marked contrasts. Mr. Frushour, for example, favors increased military
spending and a law against flag-burning. Mr. Steele wants to reduce military
spending and opposes a ban on flag burning.

The best candidate is GREGORY FRUSHOUR. He is fiscally conservative and his
military background would bring a useful perspective to Congress in an age
of worries about soldiers on welfare and declining military readiness. Mr.
Steele has sound fiscal instincts and is right in asserting that the area is
shifting demographically. But his views -- especially his belief that
marijuana should be decriminalized -- go to liberal extremes.
