MELLOW DRIVERS

The marijuana driving studies were conducted not by Cheech and Chong U.
(letter -- Aug. 3), but by the University of Adelaide and Transport SA.
These findings were recently repeated in a study and meta-analysis of
existing studies by Prof. Alison Smiley at the University of Toronto. They
found that drivers who had smoked cannabis were marginally less likely to
have an accident than those who were drug-free. It was done in the fall of
1998 and was the largest study ever done linking traffic accidents with
drugs and alcohol.
