JUDGE DISMISSES EX-OFFICIAL'S SUIT

TRENTON, (AP) -- A Superior Court judge has dismissed what remained of a
discrimination lawsuit filed by the ousted head of the New Jersey State
Police. Judge Judith A. Yaskin dismissed a claim in the suit by the former
commander, Carl A. Williams, that Gov. Christine Todd Whitman conspired with
former Attorney General Peter G. Verniero and her director of communications
to libel him, implying he was a racist. Judge Yaskin also dismissed a claim
by Mr. Williams that he had been defamed by Assemblyman LeRoy J. Jones Jr.
Earlier, she had dismissed a similar claim Mr. Williams made against The
Star-Ledger of Newark.

The rest of Mr. Williams's lawsuit was dismissed in July.

In it, Mr. Williams claimed that the governor wanted him to resign in
retaliation for published remarks he made linking minorities with drug
trafficking, and discriminated against him because she wanted to appoint a
younger, black man to head the force.

Mrs. Whitman pressed for Mr. Williams to resign in February 1999 after The
Star-Ledger published an interview in which he made comments about police
officers' stopping motorists based on their race.
