GUNS, MARIJUANA TAKEN IN BURGLARY

Thieves broke into a Colfax home and stole several guns and marijuana used
for medical treatment, a resident told authorities last week.

On Sunday, Kathleen Campbell was still waiting to hear from deputies after
reporting the theft to the Placer County Sheriff Department on Monday. She
said she did not know who would break into her family's home in rural Colfax.

Campbell told deputies someone used a ladder to break through her living
room window to gain entry and steal three firearms and a 5-foot marijuana
plant. She valued the property at about $2,100. The weapons taken included
a .45 caliber H&K pistol, a Ruger .30 caliber rifle and another rifle, she
said.

Thieves, however, didn't take all of her marijuana plants, said Campbell, 40.

"The marijuana was legal for me to use for medical purposes," said
Campbell, who listed her occupation as a mentor. "I use it strictly for
medical use."

Campbell said she has a doctor's permission to smoke the marijuana to
manage pain from migraine headaches caused by a brain ailment.

"It's permissible in this county," said Campbell, adding she plans to use
the surviving plants. "Deputies said they might come back for the other(s)."

Deputies on Sunday did not return a phone call for comment about the break-in.

In 1996s, California voters approved Proposition 215, called the
Compassionate Use Act. The initiative granted patients the right to use
marijuana with a physician's recommendation, but lawmakers and law
enforcement officials have not agreed how to implement the measure.
