FESTIVAL ENDS WITH 130 ARRESTS

Paoli, IN (AP)--A three-day dance festival billed as a drug-free rave party
ended with more than 100 arrests, mostly for drug offenses, police said.

About 3,000 people traveled to Paoli for the celebration, organized by
Colleen Riley and Matt Porter of Indianapolis.

"It was one big, monumental mess. We probably had more drugs come into our
community than I care to imagine. I just saw enough that it was really
frightening," said Orange County Sheriff Doyle Cornwell.

About 130 people were arrested, most on charges of possession of drugs, drug
paraphernalia or weapons. Local and state police searched vehicles going to
the party at Paoli Peaks, a ski resort. Confiscated drugs included ecstasy,
amphetamines and marijuana. Knives, sawed-off shotguns and drug
paraphernalia were also seized.

The jail--whose staff normally considers it a busy weekend when four people
are arrested--was filled beyhond its capacity of 70 inmates. Several people
were held in an upstairs recreation area.

A judge was forced to set lower-than-normal bonds to relieve the
overcrowding. The festival began at noon Friday and continued until Sunday
morning. Organizers acknowledged that partygoers with drugs should have
been arrested, but they criticized the police tactics.

Riley said she saw people dancing and participating in drawing and yoga
workshops on the grassy grounds of Paoli Peaks.

"You look around and think, 'Big drug fest?' It looked like a big family
picnic," she said. Riley, a self-described New Age minister, and Porter, her
husband, are founders of Stellar Awareness Magazine and owners of an online
rave-clothing store called Univibe. They had planned the festival for two
years.

"People are going to make mistakes, but just because some people make
mistakes, we shouldn't persecute the whole group," Riley said.

About 20 partygoers were treated at Orange County Hospital, many for
drug-related problems, said Craig Spence, an emergency-room doctor.

One man was transferred to a Bloomington hospital with an overdose. Officers
had to call many out-of -state parents to retrieve their children who had
been arrested, the sheriff said.
