STUDENT AMONG 40 TESTED POSITIVE

KUCHING: A college student was among some 40 nightspot patrons who
were tested positive for drugs in a major statewide operation by
Sarawak police over the weekend.

Over 200 people, including 46 women and girls, were picked up for
questioning and urine tests, in the operation against the use of
Ecstasy pills and other drugs.

The breakdown figures were 86 here, 56 in Sibu, 16 each in Miri and
Limbang, 15 in Bintulu and 14 in Sarikei. They were aged between 17
and 30 years.

The student's parents have been informed by police, who would also
notify his college.

State Anti-Narcotics Department head Supt Awang Bujang Antek said
police would continue to mount similar clean-up operations to wipe out
the drug menace.

Last week, state Deputy Commissioner of Police SAC (I) Dr Yusoff Nook
said all the 99 people arrested during the first six months this year
in connection with the use of Ecstasy pills were Chinese. The figure
represented a 25% jump over the same period of last year.

He said Ecstasy pills was the second most widely used drugs after
syabu in the state.
