DRUG MENACE HITS NEW HIGH

SINGAPORE'S relentless battle against drug trafficking has moved to a
new high.

More than 220 tonnes of narcotics with a street value of a whopping
S$5.3bil (RM11.66bil) were seized and destroyed here in the three
years from 1996 to 1998.

The amount is more than the cost of building the S$5bil (RM11bil)
20km-long North-East Mass Rapid Transit line.

The total seizure in the three-year period was probably the largest in
Singapore's history, as seizures in other years were usually worth
hundreds of million dollars only.

In the three years ending in 1998, the number of traffickers arrested
also jumped by almost 60% to 1,016, compared to the three-year period
before that.

Out of this, 78 people were convicted and hanged.
