ECSTASY USERS DOUBLE AS SELLERS

MALACCA: Ecstasy pill abusers from Johor are believed to be doubling up as
peddlers at nightspots here.

Recent arrests show that the drug is being brought into the state in small
quantities by the users, who sell them to friends.

Within a week, three cases had been detected and a total of 60 pills
recovered from seven suspected users who were on their way here from Johor.

State anti-narcotics operations chief Asst Supt Mohamad Laham said
yesterday all the cases were detected during roadblocks in Sungai Rambai,
Jasin.

He said on Aug 12 three men were arrested with 32 pills, while on Friday
night four men and a woman in two separate cars were caught with 28 Ecstasy
pills, a powdery substance believed to be heroin and cough syrup.

"We managed to spot them easily because they had taken the pills and were
shaking their heads,'' he added.

He said the suspects were headed towards town when they were stopped at a
police roadblock in Sungai Rambai at about 10.30pm.

He said they were being detained in Jasin pending further investigations.

"We will charge them under Sections 12 and 39 of the Dangerous Drugs Act,''
he said, adding that police would continue with its operations against
traffickers who were using the roads to enter the state.
