OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST, ANOTHER WOMAN PLEAD GUILTY, GET ONE YEAR SENTENCES
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- Two women, including an Olympic gold medal
winner, pleaded guilty on Friday and received one-year jail sentences for
shipping prescription cough medicine containing codeine.
Linetta Wilson, 32, of Huntington Beach, and Andrea Dewitt, 24, of Santa
Ana were told by Superior Court Judge Richard Toohey to report by November
to serve their terms in the Orange County Jail.
Wilson was a member of the United States relay team that won the gold medal
in the 1,600 meters at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Prosecutors said they had faced six felony charges each: conspiracy to
transport a controlled substance, four counts of transportation of a
controlled substance and one count of sale. Each could have received up to
five years in prison on the charges.
The women had been accused of sending 132 pint bottles of prometh codeine
by Federal Express from Irvine to Kimble County, Texas, in January and
February, and shipping a total of 48 bottles on other days.
