VICES AND CRIMES

Chris Buors' Aug. 17 letter on drug legislation was excellent. I fully
support the distinction between vice and crime and its impact on individual
liberty. But the issues aren't so clear if we consider protection of
children from exploitative influences to indulge in vices. I suspect most
are not so concerned about drug use by adults as about the tendency of their
kids to be influenced into using drugs at an age when they are unable to
make an informed, intelligent decision.

(Right. It's rare to take up drugs for the first time at 30. It starts in
youth and is often very harmful to the youths and others.)
