RUNAWAY MISSION

Casa Shelter Is Refuge For Kids On The Street

To a runaway or homeless youths, help sought on the street could turn into
a fatal decision, or lead them into drugs, prostitution and other crime.

So for 25 years, the YMCA has operated the Casa Shelter, a nonprofit refuge
for youths from ages 10 to 17. In its more than two decades, the shelter
has provided protection and counseling services to over 7,000 youths in crisis.

Casa's goal is to offer a safe, loving hand of support to a young person in
distress. The around-the-clock emergency shelter can house 16 youths for up
to 30 days. During that brief time, Casa staff workers try to change
self-destructive behavior, instill positive life skills and reunite
estranged children with worried parents. Unfortunately, Casa's mission
grows tougher every day.

The National Runaway Hotline estimates that it receives 8,000 calls
annually from Texas. The Dallas Police Department last year counted more
than 6,000 runaways. Children in poverty present a mounting problem in the
homeless population.

Many youths served by Casa are from troubled single-family homes. Many have
abused drugs or other substances. Others have attempted suicide or
demonstrated mental illness. Still others have been sexually or physically
abused. Most are perilously close to giving up on themselves, in part
because they think others have given up on them.

But Casa is giving these youths another chance at success. Some "graduates"
helped by Casa return to the shelter to help others in need.

Still, intervention efforts require time and money, and the demand never
eases. The center constantly needs volunteers and donations of items such
as clothing and toiletries.

Casa delivers a vital service to the community by providing a safety net
for troubled youths with nowhere else to turn. It is an investment that
deserves community support and praise.
