HEROIN DISGUISED AS DUCK EGGS SEIZED IN CANADA

TORONTO -- Canadian police said yesterday that they had made one of the
largest drug seizures in the nation's history, confiscating 343 pounds of
heroin, some packed into fake duck eggs.

Ten ethnic Chinese in Toronto and Vancouver were arrested after police and
border patrol agents intercepted two separate shipments, police said.

Police had been investigating Asian drug smugglers in separate
investigations since last year. Though the shipments arrived separately in
Toronto and Vancouver, police believe they were linked because of the
amount of heroin involved and the proximity of their arrival.

A shipment seized Thursday in Toronto contained 125 pounds of heroin and 37
pounds of Ecstasy pills hidden inside fake duck eggs, said Supt. Ben Soave
of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

In Vancouver, 218 pounds of heroin was found Saturday in a hidden bottom of
a shipping container, Soave said.
